Since 1968
Auroville is an international township in Tamil Nadu, India, founded as an ongoing experiment in human unity in diversity. More than 3,300 people from about 60 nations live there, working in education, farming, sustainable development, rural development, health, the arts and social enterprises.
Auroville was inaugurated on 28 February 1968 with about 5,000 people present, and calls itself the first internationally endorsed ongoing experiment in human unity and transformation of consciousness. At its centre is the Matrimandir, a place for concentration. Visitors can stay for different lengths of time, take part in workshops, volunteer, or apply to join.
