Euskal Moneta is the non-profit association behind the eusko, a citizen-run local currency launched in 2013 in the French Basque Country. Pegged 1:1 to the euro, it is accepted by local businesses and a growing number of municipalities, with paper notes, a payment card and a mobile app. It also supports the Basque language and local, lower-carbon supply chains.
Around 4.5 million eusko were in circulation as of 2025, which the association describes as the biggest local currency in Europe. In September 2026 the Sokoa works council put 20,000 eusko toward staff purchasing power, and an extraordinary general assembly discussed cross-border development of the currency.
