Growing Communities is a community-led, not-for-profit food enterprise in Hackney, north-east London, feeding city households from small organic farms since 1996. It runs a weekly organic veg scheme with collection points across north, east and south London, the all-organic Stoke Newington farmers market, and wholesale supply for local businesses. It also grows salads and greens on urban market gardens and a two-acre farm in Dagenham, with volunteering and training for new growers.
Its board is elected by veg scheme members at an AGM. It is Soil Association certified, a Living Wage employer, sends zero airfreight, and members have raised over £90k for local food banks through its Food Credit scheme. It incubated the Better Food Traders network, launched in 2020 and spun out as a CIC in 2024 with over 200 members.
