Since 1970
GrowNYC is a New York City environmental organisation founded in 1970 to improve city life through environmental programs. It runs Greenmarkets and farmstands, fresh food boxes, community and school gardens, recycling and composting education across the city.
GrowNYC began as the Council on the Environment of New York City. Its Greenmarkets let regional farmers and food makers sell directly to New Yorkers, and its fresh food boxes accept SNAP/EBT benefits. Its education work includes school gardens, Greenmarket field trips, a teaching garden on Governors Island and composting education with the city's Department of Sanitation.
