La Gonette is a citizen-run local currency for Lyon and the Rhône, pegged one to one with the euro and used as paper coupons or through an app. More than 300 businesses and associations accept it, and over 470,000 gonettes are in circulation. The euros backing each gonette sit with ethical banks La Nef and Crédit Coopératif, and La Nef doubles them to fund ecological, social and cultural projects locally.

Founded in 2015 under France's 2014 social and solidarity economy law, La Gonette treats money as a common good. Members can pay part of salaries in gonettes, trade business to business, or simply swap euros for gonettes to spend in the network.
