Maple Street Co-op was set up by Maleny locals in late 1979 and opened in January 1980 as a community-owned wholefoods store. Around 2,000 member-owners now share it; it stocks local and organic produce, employs 20 to 25 people and supports a tiny home project for affordable housing and a volunteer community garden.
Maleny's co-op story also includes a credit union, a LETS cashless currency and settlement co-ops. Maple Street's 47th AGM was held on 28 October 2026 and the co-op is inviting members onto its board.
