Since 1972
SEWA is a national trade union for women workers in India's informal economy, founded by Elaben Bhatt in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, in 1972. With about 3.7 million members across 20 states, it works for full employment and self-reliance for women who often lack secure work, income and social security.
SEWA organises members both as workers and as women. Its recent work includes a Green Transition Centre on climate adaptation and green livelihoods, the Building Cleaner Skies campaign, and a pilot heat insurance that pays workers on days when temperatures pass a set level.
