SDCEA is a non-profit environmental justice alliance of 19 affiliate organisations in South Durban, an area surrounded by refineries and heavy industry. It runs an Air Quality, Pollution and Health campaign, publishes community air quality results, shows residents how to lodge pollution complaints, and campaigns against refinery restarts and offshore drilling.
Founded in 1995 in the Austerville and Wentworth area, SDCEA employs an air quality and GIS officer and also runs a community Weather Project building early warning systems, an Energy Democracy campaign and youth programmes. In 2025 and 2026 it opposed the reopening of the Sapref refinery and rallied against offshore drilling authorisations.
