Abalimi Bezekhaya

Since 1982Works across the regionCape Flats / Cape Floristic Region
Abalimi Bezekhaya (isiXhosa for "farmers of the home") supports micro-farmers in Khayelitsha, Nyanga and across the Cape Flats to grow organic vegetables in home, community and school gardens. It runs two garden centres that supply affordable seed, seedlings and compost, trains several hundred new farmers each year, and mentors Harvest of Hope, the farmer-led marketing arm that sells township produce to city households.
Founded in 1982, the non-profit offers training and extension, soil-building and irrigation support, and organisational development for farmer groups. Its GlobalGiving reports describe more than 800 new farmers trained a year and over 3,000 micro-farmers supported with inputs. Harvest of Hope closed in 2019 and relaunched in 2022 as a farmer-led enterprise with Abalimi as mentor.
