Bangarra is a company of professional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander performers based at Walsh Bay in Sydney, on Gadigal Country. Its name is a Wiradjuri word meaning "to make fire". Bangarra creates contemporary dance theatre that brings together dance, music, poetry and design, telling the stories of Elders and making works on Country, and tours across Australia and overseas.
Bangarra emerged from NAISDA in 1989. Stephen Page was Artistic Director for more than 30 years, and the company is now led by Frances Rings as Artistic Director and Louise Ingram as Executive Director. Each year it tours major works to capital cities and regional towns, returns works to the places where they were made, and tours internationally. Its youth and community programs include the Rekindling Youth Program, regional workshops, education resources, schools and community ticketing, the Wilay Program and career pathways for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
