Since 2003
The Community Exchange System is a global platform that gives local communities the tools to exchange goods and services without money. Members list what they offer and want, then trade through time exchange, barter, swapping, gifting and sharing, with each exchange recorded. It started in Cape Town, South Africa, in 2003.
The system began as the Cape Town Talent Exchange and spread to dozens of countries, with strong take-up in Australia. It now reports more than 78,000 users in about 249 exchanges across 49 countries. People join a local exchange group or start one where none exists. Its software is being rebuilt on the Komunitin codebase.
