Since 1987
Gondwana Sanctuary is a meditation-centred intentional community on about 40 hectares at Tyagarah, near Byron Bay in northern NSW, where building began in 1987. The land is run as an active wildlife sanctuary, and the community has been restoring former cattle pasture with native vegetation.
Members own their homes and are shareholders in the land, and guests and longer-term residents also stay. Community life includes regular meditation, shared meals and beekeeping. Koalas, wallabies and flying foxes live on the land, much of which is being gradually revegetated as part of its environmental repair.
