Since 2020
Indigenous Design Labs is an Indigenous creative learning lab based in Cairns, set up in 2020 and led by Aboriginal designer Leigh Harris. It introduces young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to digital design and the creative industries through real projects, guided by mentors.
The lab brings together art, design, technology and culture. For NAIDOC 2021 its young artists made a set of Procreate brushes themed Heal Country, with proceeds going to the lab and a planned Caring for Country program. In 2024 it partnered with Australian Defence Apparel on a training program in which its young creatives designed artwork for crew uniforms and worked on a new clothing range.
