Since 1995
The Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation is an Australian Government corporate entity, based in Adelaide, that helps Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people acquire land and water-related rights and manage Indigenous-held land and waters. It buys and returns land, water rights and assets, and supports cultural and environmental site protection.
It began as the Indigenous Land Corporation on 1 June 1995, set up in response to the High Court's Mabo decision to help Indigenous Australians who were unlikely to benefit from native title or land rights. It now operates under the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Act 2005 and covers both land and waters.
