Since 1998
A Brazilian NGO restoring Atlantic Forest in the Rio Doce valley, based at a private nature reserve in Aimorés, Minas Gerais. It was started in 1998 by Lélia Wanick Salgado and Sebastião Salgado on the family's degraded farm, and now combines forest restoration with environmental education and support for rural families.
Instituto Terra grows native seedlings in its nurseries, collects seed, plants forest and protects wildlife. Its rural development work helps farming families recover springs, conserve water and soil, and take up agroforestry and silvopastoral systems. Environmental education programs for children, technicians and communities reach across Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo, and the reserve welcomes visitors.
