Since 1987
An Earth-centric, women-centric and farmer-led movement in India protecting biological and cultural diversity and the right to save and share seed. Started in 1987 by Dr Vandana Shiva, it has set up more than 150 community seed banks, with farmers growing native seeds across 22 states.
Navdanya means "nine seeds". Its training base is the Navdanya farm in Dehradun, home of Bija Vidyapeeth (Earth University), which offers courses on seed saving, agroecology, regenerative organic farming, soil and food health, biodiversity and Earth Democracy. Volunteers can live and learn on the farm year-round through the Bijak program, saving seed alongside the community.
