Since 1998
People's Environmental Planning (PEP) is a Cape Town based not-for-profit that has supported organised communities in South Africa's informal settlements since 1998. It works on affordable housing, settlement upgrading, tenure security and emergency shelter after fires and floods.
PEP was set up by architect Shawn Cuff to give technical housing help to the South African Homeless People's Federation and later the Federation of the Urban Poor. Its work includes research into low-cost building methods, technical training for residents and officials, green building, and helping communities through rezoning and surveying so residents can gain formal title to their homes. Its emergency shelter work grew into a separate organisation, Ikhayalami, and its upgrading approach was taken up in City of Cape Town policy.
