Since 1998Works nationally
The Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia grew out of informal savings groups in the late 1980s and was formed in 1998. Around 1,000 savings groups with almost 30,000 members pool their savings, plan and build brick houses together, and negotiate land with local councils, supported by the Namibia Housing Action Group.
Members save in small neighbourhood groups, take part in planning and construction, and use collective savings and partner funds for building materials and technical help. The federation reports N$39 million saved and over 7,000 houses built with water and sanitation. In April 2026 corporate partners renewed annual support and 60 more houses were planned in Karasburg, Oshakati and Otjinene. It is an affiliate of Slum/Shack Dwellers International.
