WOEIP is a resident-led environmental justice organisation working for healthy homes, jobs and neighbourhoods in West Oakland, a community hemmed in by the port, freeways and freight traffic. It uses a participatory research model that puts impacted residents at the centre, runs the West Oakland Air Quality monitoring network, and turns that data into local and state policy change.

Co-founded by Margaret Gordon, the group grew from neighbours noticing high childhood asthma rates. Its work with partners on block-by-block street-level air mapping was published in Environmental Science & Technology in 2017. Recent work includes the Owning Our Air programme and a StoryMap, 'Pollution and progress', sharing new local air data. Veronica Eady, with three decades in environmental justice and air policy, has joined as executive director.
