AirQo is a Makerere University project that designs and deploys low-cost air quality monitors built for African conditions. Its network now spans 500+ monitors in more than 16 cities in nine African countries, with a free app, open API and the Africa Clean Air Forum.
Founded in 2015 at Makerere University by Prof Engineer Bainomugisha. Named a 2026 Earthshot Prize finalist in the Clean Our Air category (September 2026). Also runs a student developer conference (DevCon) and the Kampala Air Quality Study.
