FarmerJawn is a Black woman-owned farm business started by Christa Barfield in the Philadelphia area after she left healthcare work in 2018. It grows organic food, runs a community-supported agriculture program and farms land at the Elkins Estate in Cheltenham and on 123 acres leased at Westtown School in Chester County.
Barfield describes the work as growing food for people and widening access to organic food whatever someone's income. Education programs run through the FarmerJawn & Friends Foundation Fund. At Westtown, the plan announced in 2022 was to farm half the land, train people of colour to farm the rest, run the farm stand, and build an incubator for smaller farms run by Black farmers.
