Since 1947
Rodale Institute is a nonprofit in Kutztown, Pennsylvania, growing the regenerative organic agriculture movement through research, farmer training and education. Founded by J.I. Rodale in 1947 as the Soil and Health Foundation, it runs the Farming Systems Trial, the longest-running side-by-side comparison of organic and conventional farming, started in 1981.
Beyond its Pennsylvania farm, Rodale has organic centres in California, Iowa and Washington, partner farms, and a European centre run with the Davines Group. Its agronomists consult one-on-one with farmers moving to organic, and it runs training for veterans and beginning farmers, field days, webinars and online courses. It helped create the Regenerative Organic Certified label, covering soil health, animal welfare and worker fairness, and shares free resources and school gardening curricula.
