Gold Coast and Hinterland Environment Council (GECKO)

Gecko, the Gold Coast and Hinterland Environment Council, is a volunteer-powered community environment group based at Gecko House in Currumbin, Queensland. It campaigns to protect biodiversity, koalas, open spaces and green city planning on the Gold Coast, and runs environmental education for school students.

Gecko began on 29 October 1989 as the Gold Coast Environment Centre, when local conservation groups came together; its roots go back to a 1979 campaign to protect the Currumbin Estuary. Today it runs GeckoEd, Bush Care groups, Clean Up Australia Day on the Gold Coast, Gold Coast Green Week, the annual Environmental Awards and monthly Gecko Talks, with more than 100 volunteers.
