Sensor.Community began in Stuttgart as a local effort to place about 300 do-it-yourself particulate sensors around the city. Volunteers, often neighbours building together, assemble low-cost kits that measure PM10, PM2.5, temperature, humidity and noise, and every reading goes to a public open data map.
Started in 2015 in Stuttgart, it has grown to about 14,000 sensor stations in more than 70 countries, with open-source build guides in over 20 languages. Build-your-own-sensor workshops connecting new devices to the network ran at the 39th Chaos Communication Congress in December 2025.
