Substation33 is a social enterprise of the Logan community organisation YFS, started in 2012 by youth worker Tony Sharp. Locals drop off anything with a plug or battery, and trainees dismantle it by hand so parts can be reused, repurposed or properly recycled. Along the way it runs job-training programs for young people and long-term unemployed locals, and its technical team builds new products from recovered e-waste.
Beyond e-waste, Substation33 runs a Containers for Change refund point, a Solar Coffee Trailer that turns up at community events, a schools program, and training streams such as Build IT (a 22-week construction course for 15 to 24 year olds), Refurb IT and Drive IT. Its innovation work includes lithium-ion battery management projects. In 2026 it was out at the Logan Eco Action Festival and the All In Logan Reconciliation Event, and new Refurb IT and Drive IT trainees had just started.
