Since 2007
An Aboriginal-owned, not-for-profit company formed in 2007 by the Traditional Owners of the Warddeken Indigenous Protected Area on the Arnhem Plateau in west Arnhem Land. It cares for almost 1.4 million hectares of stone and gorge country, combining traditional ecological knowledge with Western science.
Warddeken works from the homeland communities of Kabulwarnamyo, Manmoyi and Kamarrkawarn, just east of Kakadu National Park. Up to 130 Indigenous rangers each year work on fire management and carbon abatement, weed and feral animal control, rock art conservation, education and cultural heritage. The Warddeken IPA was declared in 2009 and is part of Australia's National Reserve System.
