Chiemgauer e.V. runs a regional currency across the Rosenheim, Traunstein and Berchtesgadener Land districts in Bavaria. About 350 local businesses accept it, and a small fee on exchange back to euros funds the local nonprofit each member chooses. Notes lose value over time unless renewed, which keeps money moving in the region.
Around 4,300 consumers, 347 businesses and 290 partner nonprofits take part, and close to one million euros has gone to regional associations (June 2026). New acceptance points keep joining in 2026, and founder Christian Gelleri published a book on the model in August 2026.
