Since 2010
Grassroots Economics is a non-profit based in Kilifi, Kenya, that has supported communities to build thriving local economies since 2010. It developed commitment pooling, where communities issue vouchers for their own goods and services so that trade doesn't depend on scarce national currency, and it runs the Sarafu Network.
Its open-source CLC app gives people accounts, vouchers, offerings and commitment pools. The Sarafu Network has more than 26,000 users and over 285,000 peer-to-peer exchanges. It also runs a Heal Ecosystems program and the Mnyumbuni Center, a bioregional hub and demonstration farm in the Takaungu Creek watershed, and shares open datasets, research, games and a book.
